This is a fun recipe that kids LOVE to help with. Apple pies inside the apple itself. Let’s get started! Take your apples (3-5 Granny Smith Apples), cut off the tops and carve out the inside getting as close to the outside of the apple as you can. Collect the inside part of an apple in a bowl, removing any seeds. To the apple filling add 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon ground Cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Mix together and you have your apple pie filling! Stuff the apple shells with your filling, make sure they are overstuffed or the pie crust will sag into the apple. To make your crust you can see the pie crust tutorial on our Strawberry Raspberry pie here: Strawberry Raspberry Pie and Crust Recipe
To make a half batch of the crust if you are only making a few apples change your quantities as follows:
1 1/4 cups flower
1/4 cup shortening
1/4 teaspoon salt
still use 8-10 tablespoons of water Roll out the dough into a circle Cut your pie crust into thin strips (I find a pizza cutter does this easily) Lay the crust out in a lattice by weaving the crust. Lay down three strips of crust vertically, lift the middle piece up and lay one one strip down horizontally, replace the center strip so it is now laying over the horizontal strip. Now pick up the two outside vertical strips and lay another horizontal piece. Repeat until the apple is covered in crust. Cut off extra crust, make sure you leave enough so that it covers the whole opening of the apple. Place the apples in a 8×8 pan and cover with aluminum foil Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for another 20 minutes. Let cool and enjoy your cute little Apple Pies in their Apple Shells!
